個人簡介
I am writing with the intention of securing a position teaching English in Taiwan. Although my professional background is in the visual arts and not education specifically, my interactions abroad as a cultural traveler, as well as an active engagement with Taiwanese and American contemporary culture, when coupled with my personal experiences involving foreign languages and visual communication strategies will enable me to act as a successful English teacher as well as an exceptional and understanding cultural ambassador. Studying abroad in Rome, Italy allowed me to practice many of the skills I hope to utilize as an English teacher. Despite my very basic level of Italian, I was awarded an internship at the Laboratorio Incontri D¡¦Arte where only Italian is spoken. The activities I was involved in carried a high degree of responsibility and creative freedom. It is my understanding that my sincere effort and flexibility toward communication, as well as my active engagement with the culture and a high level of professionalism lead to this increased responsibility. Furthermore, while studying in Italy, I found the communication difficulties interesting and challenging instead of frustrating or impossible. I look back fondly at the various methods utilized in interaction, ranging from broken Italian and English to drawing and animalistic noises. These experiences in learning how to interact, even when communication breaks down, taught me to search for solutions and creative answers instead of becoming frustrated, resentful or defeated. My training as a creative, visual artist will only help these faculties. My interest in Taiwanese culture, historical and contemporary, grants me a starting point from which to develop a more realized understanding of this complex society along with it¡¦s philosophies and customs. Much of the visual art I am most interested in evolves from a practice that intentionally meshes the ideas of Eastern and Western culture. This leads me to believe that there will be an interest in cultural exchange during my time in Taiwan from which I can learn as well as contribute much. My already piqued interest in this culture as well as my in-depth knowledge of American art, music and cinema will allow for this interchange to flourish, benefiting my students and myself with a cultural experience that goes far beyond the simple learning of a language. Lastly, during my undergraduate career, I took three years of the Italian language, which enhanced many skills that will prove valuable while teaching English in Taiwan. I was exposed to multiple language teaching methods. This allowed me to contrast the methods that worked well with those that did not. At the same time, it instilled an understanding for students¡¦ differences and the various strategies that successfully address these differences. Also, by moving through the various levels of Italian, I developed an understanding of how language classes at different skill levels are structured, allowing me to comfortably plan for and enact an English class at almost any level. Due to my cross-cultural experiences, my experience with language education and an active engagement in both Eastern and American contemporary culture, I feel that I would be ideally suited for teaching English in Taiwan, while at the same time creating meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships with Taiwanese students. I hope that you agree and eagerly await your response. Thank you for your time. Also, I am planning on being based in Taichung as my girlfriend, who I will be traveling with, Sonja Lin has family there. Please take this into account with regards to placement. Thanks again.
